Architectural Photography of Castle Green Moat Bridge by Moxon Architects

The blog of Simon Kennedy, Architectural Photographer based in London.

The design of the Moat Bridge by Moxon Architects alongside Structural Engineers Flint & Neill is intended to show respect to the Grade 1 listed medieval castle it runs alongside. It connects Castle Green with Goodland Gardens, within constraints that climb 1.8m along its length to provide a link where a pathway had previously existed. The bridge is gently curved, subtly towards the South West Tower of the Castle maintaining a clear and simple route from one end of the site to the other. The deck tapers towards either end of the bridge. Castle Green is a large urban square while Goodland Gardens are a close wooded public park. The south abutment is broad borrowing the hard landscaping of the square and the north end is tied through with the narrow paths that run through the gardens. The taper sets up a false perspective, combined with the gentle curve, conceived to visually shorten the uphill journey to the square while apparently prolonging the downhill stroll into the gardens.
