Moxon Architects - Gaernshiel Bridge

This is the newly-opened Gairnshiel Jubilee Bridge by London and Crathie based Moxon Architects – currently featuring on BD Online, Architecture Today, Scottish Construction Now, Urbanrealm, Metalocus, Archdaily, Designboom etc etc…

The new bridge means that the very beautiful Gairnshiel Bridge, built in 1749, no longer needs to serve as a road bridge, for which due to its geometry and structure it was anyway deeply unsuited. The bridge alleviates the need for a 58km detour that heavy goods vehicles needed to take, or all vehicles if the existing bridge was damaged, as it frequently was.

Having drawn on a detailed analysis of the historic bridge, the practice engaged in years of consultations with the community and various heritage bodies to ensure a harmonious relationship to its locale both visually and functionally. Featuring a slim, single span, weathering steel structure and recycled, locally sourced granite the bridge looks stunning and highly appropriate in its magnificent context, as captured by Simon Kennedy, London Architectural Photographer.
