Architectural photography of Hemel Hempstead Crematorium, by London based Haverstock Architects.
This extraordinary structure, impressively located within a green belt, features an intricately designed chapel which can hold up to 140 people. The complex geometry of the space means that a feeling of intimacy can be created no matter how much smaller than that number the congregation is. The chapel looks out onto a “protected view garden”, which provides a natural outlook as well as daylight for the large space, while blending with the natural landscape beyond.
The site is extensively and beautifully landscaped, with woodland areas and a memorial garden and pavilion complementing the necessary parking areas, all linked by a very clear and perceptible circulation diagram. The landscaped features flow into and integrate perfectly with the timber and brick architecture.
I was fortunate enough to visit this amazing building both in the summer and the winter and it looked incredible under both types of light.
