Architectural photography of The Steading, Ardoch, by London and Crathie based Moxon Architects.
The steading, predating the main farmhouse at Ardoch by 20-30 years, is a solid ‘L’ plan former byre made of granite and slate. It has been repurposed as additional living and study space, along with accommodation for friends and family. Retaining the original apertures, the structure has been updated while preserving its fabric. Frameless glass maintains the form of the openings, which can be shuttered during winter storms.
The interior was rebuilt using the existing volumes as a guide. Twinned roof ties and joists echo the original construction, while the refined geometry of the roof hip, hayloft, and ventilation slits define the entrance and kitchen space. Clay plaster and oak feature throughout, except in the bathroom, where riven Caithness slabs cover the floor and ceramic tiles the walls. Oak joinery conceals modern appliances, emphasizing the space’s experience.
