A stunning foot and cycle bridge by the amazing Moxon Architects with engineering by IB Miebach in Balingen, Germany.
This one features glulam beams that span 40m (!) in length, curving and flaring outwards as they approach each bank in order to widen, improving their accessibility. These beams not only provide the structure but also the balustrade (they extend sufficiently above the deck level), flood protection (same reason as before) and the sustainability credentials via their ability to weather naturally and last at least as long as an equivalent steel structure, and the use of timber to offset the embedded carbon in the concrete abutments. It doesn’t hurt that they also look incredible.
A joy to shoot.
