ARUP GROUP
A privilege to shoot London’s newest transport system – the Luton Dart stations for Arup Group and the Gateway Bridge and viaduct for Knights Architects.
The DART carries passengers from Luton Parkway station to the airport, removing the need for the shuttle bus – one that I remember clearly as being quite a significant pain for all those needing to get to/from a Luton Airport flight.
The stations provide significant infrastructural bandwidth enabling up to 18 million passengers per year, and consist of some breath-taking spaces with extraordinary gold-clad columns and ceilings. As you might expect from the mighty Arup group, the engineering is clearly and powerfully visible in the huge spans of the “parasols”, stainless steel ties that hold them down, and the beams that fly excitingly through the cavernous halls.
Although it only takes 5 minutes or so, the driverless train gives a striking, science-fiction experience, and interestingly is pulled on a cable system making it effectively a cable car.
Great to spend a number of days working on this, getting some unique views, and seeing the buildings with and without the passengers.
