DUKES MEADOWS FOOTBRIDGE, BARNES, LONDON, 2023

MOXON ARCHITECTS

his is the amazing new bridge at Duke’s Meadow, London by the mighty London and Crathie-based Moxon Architects, as featured in the Architects Journal, Architecture Today, and many more.

The bridge serves to connect two sections of the Thames Path, where previously a long internal detour was required. The bridge is highly accessible, and therefore enables new recreational possibilities while encouraging foot traffic as a sustainable form of transport, and granting new views of the numerous rowing boats and crews that use this stretch of the river.

The form of the bridge meanders to give a variety of views including to the Duke’s Hollow nature reserve aided by the transparency of the structure, which is a “half through” truss form with distinctive angled bracing members.

The bridge features circular section vertical balustrade elements which catch the light from all directions and add to the light and elegant feel. Walking along the bridge is a fantastic experience, and I was fortunate to get some beautiful, low winter sunlight during the days I photographed it. Bridges are definitely among my favourite things to shoot.
